As every year passes I feel like I keep saying that I cannot believe that my kids are growing older. The years really do pass by in a blink of an eye. I was told time would fly, but I didn’t know it would go this fast! Since Cam’s second birthday fell on a Thursday this year, I thought we would have some birthday surprises at home with him and his 4 year old sister, Capri. Hopefully this is a memorable birthday for him.

I always have streamers and balloons from Oriental Trading around the house. If you are coming up on a birthday, be sure to check out their party supplies. We had a Ninja Turtle themed birthday party with family and friends last weekend but the weather was blah. However, piñatas are always a huge hit in our family and Oriental Trading had the coolest pull-string piñata, perfect for kids!

Birthday Wake Up

I thought it would be fun to decorate Cam’s door so he started the day with a super surprise. Since he is only 2, he obviously doesn’t understand what it means to have a birthday so doing different things throughout the day help with comprehension.

It was really easy to set up the door decorations. Just some balloons and streamers! Cam had the biggest smile on his face when he came out of his room. I was lucky to catch it on camera because he happened to be awake when daddy checked on him before leaving for work. I was given the heads up that he would be coming out soon. Check out the cute video.

Special Breakfast

I love starting a birthday off with a special breakfast. Last year, Capri chose to have donuts. But since Cam can’t really decide yet, Capri helped me make a special pancake breakfast. Pancakes seem to be Cam’s favorite food lately so he was excited! I also had these Ninja Turtle plates leftover from the party last weekend so we kept on with the Ninja Turtles theme throughout meals.

Balloon Popping Game

Unfortunately it was a rainy day so I knew we wouldn’t be heading outside much. So I planned out six special games or events for certain times that we could do in the house. I wrote down the times on balloons and we taped them to the door, low enough for Cam to pop them when the time came around. My ideas weren’t anything different from regular things we do, but since these were MY idea to do, it seemed to be more fun.

The things we did were:

  • Have a dance party
  • Play with outside toys, in the house! (this was a big shocker to the kids)
  • Went out to have an ice cream cone for lunch
  • Had a big bubble bath in my Jacuzzi tub
  • Ordered pizza for dinner
  • Stayed up late watching the Penguins hockey game

Make a Birthday Special in Your Own Way

You don’t have to be fancy and planning can be done quickly thanks to awesome, fast shipping from Oriental Trading. I try to figure out different birthday traditions for my kids that I can re-do each year and I think we have found ours for Cam.

What do you do on the actual day of your kids birthday if you don’t have a party that day with friends and family?

The Choosy Mommy came to life as I began writing for the Choosy Kids (www.choosykids.com) blog from the mom perspective. We also have bloggers who are teachers, nutritionist, pediatricians, dental experts, etc. and I share my two cents on food choices, physical activity, and daily health routines plus so much more! I have a ton to share but didn’t want to take over the Choosy Kids blog so I decided it was best to grow The Choosy Mommy brand.
